ONE of Australia's largest chicken shop entrepreneurs has pleaded not guilty to murdering his long-term boyfriend and business partner.

Gerurdas Gerrit Heijne, 44, is accused of the wilful murder of Frank Cianciosi, 55, between January 3 and January 4 this year.

Heinje co-owned the Lenards chicken franchise in WA with Mr Cianciosi.

The Perth Magistrate's Court has been told Heijne killed his lover in the pair's luxury East Perth apartment overlooking the Swan River.

The court has not yet heard evidence as to how Mr Cianciosi died.

The charge against Mr Heijne today was upgraded from murder to wilful murder.

Heinje, a thick-set, bald man, appeared via video link from Hakea prison, wearing a black loose fitting v-neck sweater.

He was remanded in custody and committed to stand trial in Perth next month.
