Kitchener Mitsubishi dealership closes

KITCHENER — After only six months as a Mitsubishi dealership, Gary Stockie Motors has closed its doors.

Owner Gary Stockie is blaming the loss of his General Motors franchise in 2009 for the demise of the sprawling dealership, located on Ottawa Street between King and Weber streets.

“General Motors’ decision to terminate our franchise has left us no choice but to close the dealership,” says a sign posted on the door and dated Dec. 17. “All of the staff would like to thank you and all of our customers for their great support in the past.”

Potential customers are referred to the Mitsubishi website or Cambridge Mitsubishi on Eagle Street.

Stockie was a longtime GM dealer who sold his dealership in Stratford in 2008 and purchased the former Stedelbauer Motors on Ottawa Street in Kitchener.

But barely a year later he was victimized by GM’s massive cost-reduction plan when the cash-strapped automaker closed 44 per cent of its franchises across North America.

Choosing not to join a lawsuit of other former GM dealers, Stockie tried to carry on selling used cars and appeared to have gained new life when he picked up the Mitsubishi franchise last June. But it wasn’t enough.

Neither Stockie nor anyone from Mitsubishi Canada were available for comment.

When Stockie purchased Stedelbauer, it employed about 60 people.
