SPRINGFIELD, Ill.— The Illinois Department of Public Health states that 46 Subway franchises are currently linked to the outbreak and are being tested.
State public health director Dr. Damon T. Arnold said, “In an effort to prevent a secondary outbreak, the Department is taking precautions by requiring food handlers at certain SUBWAY® restaurants in Illinois to be tested and cleared before being allowed to handle food.”
As of Friday, the state’s health department is now reporting 90 cases of Salmonella serotype Hvittingfoss. All individuals are recovering, including 25 who had been hospitalized. Salmonella cases identified in this outbreak reported that they had eaten at Subway restaurants in 28 Illinois counties.

Chicago law firm, The Law Group, Ltd. is investigating filing a class action law suit against Subway restaurants on behalf of Illinois residents who sustained injuries from the salmonella outbreak after allegedly eating a Subway sandwich. “Our investigation points to lettuce, green peppers, red onions, and tomatoes as the food source," says one of the firm’s attorneys, Kenneth B. Moll.
Confirmed cases have reported eating at restaurants between May 5 and June 4, 2010. Cases range in age from 2 years to 79 years old.
In another incident, a Subway store in Lombard, Illinois was allegedly responsible for an outbreak of the Shigella bacteria in March. Shigella is a foodborne illness often caused by food coming into contact with water polluted by human feces. Two lawsuits were filed by Seattle-based foodborne illness law firm, Marler Clark. The firm’s website claims, “At least 116 people have been culture confirmed with Shigella sonnei infections apparently contracted at a Chicago-area Subway restaurant. Ten of the ill were hospitalized.”
