Quiznos hires Subway employee fired for helping fire victims

"I heard about the story and as luck would have it, my store had an opening," said Webber. "I thought it was great timing, so we tracked her down to see if she was interested." In addition to hiring Heise, Webber has committed to contributing $1 from every sub sold at one local Quiznos location from June 12 to June 20 and then match that amount to help those displaced by the fire.

HALIFAX — Subway fired her when she gave sub sandwiches to neighbours who had been left homeless by an apartment fire.

Rival Quiznos has now stepped in and given Heidi Heise a new job.

"Heidi is a person who was trying to do the right thing," said Quiznos franchisee Steve Webber on Friday.

"These are the kind of people Quiznos likes to have working in our stores."

Last Thursday, fire forced dozens of tenants out of their units, but Heise's apartment was untouched so she offered to house two neighbours who lost their homes and their belongings.

When the two men showed up at her workplace to thank her, Heise gave them a couple of subs that she was entitled to have as a Subway worker.

"I knew they had no food, no money and nowhere to live so I gave them each a six-inch sub (that) I was supposed to write down as my employee meal," Heise explained.

Heise, who had worked at the restaurant full-time for the past 10 months and had never received warnings or discipline, said she forgot to record she had taken the subs.

Subway responded by firing her.

"I heard about the story and as luck would have it, my store had an opening," said Webber. "I thought it was great timing, so we tracked her down to see if she was interested."

In addition to hiring Heise, Webber has committed to contributing $1 from every sub sold at one local Quiznos location from June 12 to June 20 and then match that amount to help those displaced by the fire.
