3 Sylvan Learning centers close

Customers who have pre-paid for Sylvan services have the option of either continuing the same educational programs by transferring their children to the Sylvan Learning center in Broomfield or through Sylvan's online services. Anyone who would like a refund should contact the former owners.

Three Northern Colorado Sylvan Learning centers, including a Fort Collins location, have closed because of a substantial drop in business.

The Sylvan Learning center, a tutoring and supplemental education service center, at 255 E. Monroe Drive, along with two Greeley and Boulder locations, closed May 7 after a 45 percent year-over-year decline in sales, according to the franchise owner of the three centers.

The learning centers were independently owned and operated by franchisee H&S Educational Enterprises Inc. and its shareholders, Bruce and Sherry Hassan and Kristen Smith, under a license agreement with franchisor Sylvan Learning Inc.

On Friday afternoon in a phone interview, Bruce Hassan of Florida said there were not enough sales to support the business, which he launched in 2007 with hopes of moving to Northern Colorado permanently.

Bruce Hassan said the correlation between his drop in business and the recession played a large role in what caused the abrupt closure.

"The economy and the economics were certainly a primary driver of the business decision (to close)," said Hassan, who served about 50 clients in Larimer County.

Customers who have pre-paid for Sylvan services have the option of either continuing the same educational programs by transferring their children to the Sylvan Learning center in Broomfield or through Sylvan's online services. Anyone who would like a refund should contact the former owners.

While Bruce Hassan said he has no plans to reopen the centers in Northern Colorado, he believes someone will franchise another Sylvan Learning center in the region at some point.

"We are deeply sorry for the closure and short notice," he said. "It was unavoidable. Personally we love the Northern Colorado area and want to make it home."
