Post defends franchise decision

New Zealand Post says the closure of some of its Post Shops and Kiwi Bank services is part of a review of its franchise and network outlets.

A number of franchise owners are angry that their contracts are not being renewed and that they will not be compensated for the closure of their businesses.

Group manager retail Michelle van Gaalen says NZ Post has fixed term contracts with franchisees and most are on an annual renewal cycle. She says there is no guarantee franchises will be extended and franchisees knew the terms when they bought their business.

In Auckland, a protest is planned for tomorrow against the closure of the Sandringham Post Shop and Kiwi Bank.
