A man acquitted in the infamous Just Desserts shooting has been shot dead in his native Jamaica, where he was deported to five years ago.
O’Neil Grant, 35, was targeted and shot by two men in a Kingston bus station Monday night, Jamaican authorities said. He was pronounced dead in hospital. Grant had been charged in the high-profile death of Georgina (Vivi) Leimonis, 23, a bystander who was shot and killed while sitting in the Just Desserts café in Toronto in April, 1994.
Grant was acquitted of the charges after being held in prison for five years. He was deported in 2002, despite protests from his lawyers and family, most of whom are Canadian citizens. One man was convicted of first-degree murder in the Just Desserts killing, while another was convicted of manslaughter.
