This season might not be a dream come true for Nizar Velji, who owns the Country Style Donuts franchise at 550 Hespeler Rd. in Cambridge.

Velji expects to be among the casualties as struggling Country Style Food Services Inc. continues to close what it calls "under-performing" shops in a bid to restructure.

"It's very frustrating," Velji says.

He has watched some other local Country Style Donut shops around fall victim in recent weeks.

"But nobody is talking to us or giving us an answer. Nobody is telling us anything and we have nothing in writing."

Velji, who has owned his franchise store for 18 years, says that his business is "self-sustaining, but nothing to write home about."

Waterloo Region's non-smoking bylaw, he says, certainly caused a decline in business.

While he is braced for the worst and admits his store is "older," one has to feel for him.

"After 18 years when you've given them the best years of your life and sweated blood, this (lack of communication) is not the best way to do things," he says.
