Sobeys sued by IGA retailers

The Sobeys Inc. grocery chain says it has received notice that a statement of claim has been filed against it and its subsidiary, Sobeys Capital Inc., by 16 independent IGA retail dealers in Ontario. The action is in connection with an alleged breach of franchise agreements between these 16 dealers and Oshawa Group Ltd., and claims damages of up to $262-million. Sobeys of Stellarton, N.S., purchased Oshawa Group in 1999. Sobeys said it believes the action is frivolous and without merit.
