About 65 angry Pizza Pizza franchise owners gave head office a pizza their mind yesterday.

Franchise owners demonstrated outside the Jarvis St. office to express their disapproval of vice-president Lorn Austin, who has a criminal record, said spokesman David Michael.

Austin, 43, whose convictions started in 1977 and include theft, fraud and racketeering, was released from a Florida jail in 1989 after he served time for a multi-million-dollar scam.

“The franchisees are appalled they’re placed in business partnership with someone of Austin’s background,” said Michael, 35.

But Pizza Pizza chairman Michael Overs defended “exemplary” Austin and said” “We see no reason to sever our relationship with a valued member of our management team.”

Michael said the deeper reason for the protest is head office doesn’t issue detailed statements to the franchisees – there are 142 Pizza Pizza operations in greater Metro – on how it spends their money.

“Pizza Pizza administers millions of dollars in charges, yet we’ve never had an audited statement. A person has virtually no control over his investment.”

Overs said “independent auditors are completing a thorough, five-year review of the funds that Pizza Pizza overseas on behalf of our franchise owners.”
